Nick Schmaltz
This guy just can't play defense. Watch that first goal by the Blues (from 2:07 on).
That was all Schmaltz. It starts with him taking a bad penalty in the offensive zone. A stick between the skates. Dumb. But let's not focus on that. Watch the way he slowly skates back down the ice. Everybody else is hustling (well, Kane is Kane but at least he fakes backchecking). Then Schmaltz gets to the defensive zone, and skates AWAY from his position. Towards the corner, where there was nothing for him to do, leaving the closest Blues player open.
Mind you, he is the center of this line, he should hold the middle of the ice. He lets Schenn score from the high slot unchallenged!
From beginning to end, this goal was on Schmaltz, 100%. Schmaltz has skill with the puck, but I do not understand why Q does not play him on the wing. He is worse than Kane was as a center.
And why is Schmaltz killing penalties (he is on the third rotation with Anisimov)? The team has no shortage of talentless bottom six guys to fill that role.

The fact that Q continues to stick with him at center shows his stubbornness. I would have thought this would have been the Kane experiment, but now, Q continues to throw Schmaltz out at a position that he can't play.

He's a good skater, handles the puck pretty well and gets some turnovers...........not sure why that would qualify a guy w/o positional awareness on the PK?

I sense Schmaltz is feeling his pending RFA status. He just needs to relax and play. Worry about the contract situation later. Besides, he should know that with Stan as the GM, he'll make an offer well above Schmaltz's best ask anyway.

For the last two seasons, he's also been the absolute worst player in the league at faceoffs (out of anyone who regularly takes faceoffs).
Standing nicely at 33.93% in the current season.

Hey, if he was a baseball player, he'd be a Hall of Famer with that percentage.

He comes back to the bench after that performance and I'm shanking him. Prick bastard. Can't stand that lazy shit from forwards. And you are right about Kane. He has perfected the art of appearing to come back hard on the back check with all that fake movement. But at least he can say he was there when Q shows them the video (yeah, sure) the next day.

I'd have to disagree with the notion that Schmaltz can't play defense. His backchecking is Hossa like. In this particular play, he took a penalty and quit on the play probably due to frustration. That doesn't mean he can't play D, but he should be held accountable for the lack of effort.

He can stick check a guy from behind...his defensive awareness and positioning and effort leave a lot to be desired.
Patrick Kane tried to copy Datsyuk's stick lift...is he known as even reliable in his own end?
