NHL has moved toward a 5 man unit in pretty much all zones now. A whole bunch of coaches are still stuck in the mindset of defense defends, forwards score. Play conservative, drop back in coverage, don't get caught deep on the forecheck, and wait for mistakes.
The reality is, you need to defend with 5 guys, and attack with 5 guys. You have to forecheck and disrupt the breakout, because teams are too good at skating the puck out or beating the passive D in the neutral zone. If you have a half ass forecheck, the D is just going to roast you and gain the zone themselves. The Hawks get killed in transition because of their forecheck system. They play a passive forecheck, yet somehow still get 3 forwards caught deep....
Their D doesn't take open ice.... Instead, they sit back, go D to D a few times, and try to pass through 3 defenders stacked in the neutral zone.
In the defensive zone, they are all about playing zone. Nobody stays with their man. Everyone is always running around, defending their "space". They are actively taught NOT to engage guys physically and eliminate them along the boards. Instead, just sit back and swing your stick at them, like you're always on the PK. Wingers collapse way too low, so the opposing team can cycle to the point at will. It just doesn't work.
I hate this team right now. One of the worst teams to watch in the NHL, and the least exciting Hawks' team since about 2006.

That was awesome. Seabs contract was worth it just for that goal . I still don't know how Saad was called for a coincidental penalty on what should have been Hammers winning regulation goal. Perhaps Hawks should watch this video before their games.

The coincidental penalty call there was just atrocious. There's just no justification behind it.

It feels like too much to ask them to go in there and actually win a game right now. And that is probably the biggest problem with this bunch as the season plays out. The inconsistency has been one thing, but it seems like a lack of effort or caring has overtaken just the poor construction of the team. Ultimately that will make good performances rarer and rarer in the second part of the season. This is like the Loafs game in that losing to Detoilet is UNACCEPTABLE. But with another break coming a sleepwalk like before their five day break is to me more likely to happen. Detoilet 4, Hawks 1. The Leafs are such a better team than the Hawks; so not sure why that loss is anywhere near surprising, much less 'unacceptable'. Coaching alone made last night a complete mismatch. Because it's the leafs and the leafs are cunts. Signed, every non leafs fan living in Canada

Hawks struggles continue. They played hard the last 2 games, just not well. They were better than they were against the Isles & the last Wangs game. Detoliet isn't that good. Hawks 3-1.

Hawks looked good...long overdue for a solid W like that...especially on the road...on a B2B night...after a tough loss the night before

The Wings got bitch-slapped by Alex DeMidget.

Always a good sign when the younger players dominate the scoring sheet. #19 had a good game. . How many posts did Wangs hit? Sometimes things just go your way. Another vacation for Hawks this weekend except #88.

I wonder what Hawks players do during these kind of days off, since they always come back looking like they're out of shape and stupid.
It shouldn't even be possible to get so bad by just not playing for a few days, unless they're just eating cheeseburgers and freebasing heroin 24/7.

That arguably may be the best two-way effort from four lines all season. Detroit still had scoring chances, but the back-checking and recovery from all lines, and especially the top three, was stellar for the most part. Agreed with the feed - Toews also looked engaged last night.

Man, there were a ton of empty seats in Detroit last night.
Why is Zetterberg still a Red Wing? I guess it's his contract that makes him stuck in Little Caesars village.
