I pine for the days of Huet. It was easier to make fun of him. For Glass, you just feel sorry that he has been put in this position in the first place.

Agreed, and the more I have watched him the easier it is to see why he languished outside the NHL for so long. At this point play him evenly with Forsberg. They should know what they have by now and winning is kind of counterproductive to the pick they need to get this year to start restocking the cupboard. Neither of the two are going to win you games by themselves...even if you may deserve to eke out at least a point at the end of the day. Also last night reminded me of a lot of hawks road games in the 2000's, where they would play half decently for half the game or two periods and the walls would come crashing in during the third. NOT a good memory after so many years of prosperity. Those teams were always watched with the feeling of inevitable collapse just around the corner...exactly how last night felt.

If this was any other team, Q would have been fired after last night's game, right? I know 3 Cups, blah blah blah, but NHL teams churn through coaches. Hell, the Pens have won as many Cups as the Hawks have since Q got here, and have had 4 coaches during the same time. I'm not saying that Q getting canned would magically turn around this team, but the lack of nothing happen certainly isn't a good look for management. I think this touches on something I've longed believed: Coaches don't really amount to shit in this league. And now that I'm a couple beers in, maybe I'm not thinking clearly. But here's the thing: Anyone else that gets hired would just end up doing some other random bullshit that common knowledge will disagree with. Q's tenure as a coach is so overrated. He won Cups with a totally stacked teams. Hall of fame players playing in the primes of their careers. But even a coach like Babcock is up to shenanignas in Toronto. So who else do the Hawks bring in that would improve upon Q? I really don't know the answer here. There's probably a lot of coaches that would be able to be an equivalent trade-off, but every coach is going to end up being fascinated by the 4th line grinder who can occassionally fill in the top 6 (but then that coach will insist they're bonafide top 6 over the clearly more talented players that suddenly go to the bottom 6) Every team in the league ends up dealing with that bullshit. And this MIGHT be coming off as a pro-Q rant. But really it's just the opposite. Fire that dipshit. He's meaningless to the team and as previusly established, coaches contributions are largely overrated. He is inconsequential to every thing that has happened the past 10 years. This team is clearly no longer interested in playing, so bring in a new guy to wake the rest of them up. But really, has there ever been a key moment where Q put in some brilliant line match-ups to give this team the edge? Like, when you have Toews, Kane, and Hossa, there are literally no moves you can do that would be wrong. (And Q still found the worng moves when he made helathy scratches to his best line in favor of 'fresh legs') Q might go down as the most overrated coach of all-time in Chicago. Which is saying something, considering how overrated Ditka, Phil Jackson, and Maddon already are. Fuck Q. Can him. The team will be no different. I'm not arguing with your point. My reasoning is about messaging to the team and the fans. You look at coaching firings in the NHL and there's almost always a descernible bump for the team as players "buy in" with the coach. I personally think the idea the Hawks are going to tank and rebuild doesn't line up with management's philosophy, as long as Kane & Toews are here and making $21 million between them, to say nothing of all the core guys from the 3 Cups. So putting yourself in a position where you are telling the rest of the league (especially free agents) that the ship is rudderless is a bad look. McEgo has always supposed to be the guy who understand messaging, but of course we know he doesn't, he just knows how to make himself look like he understands messaging to a fawning press. He's Baghdad Bob, but where people believe his shit.

Yep, I think we're just about on the same page here. As Pez more succinctly put it, coaches are window dressing. We're led to believe they're super important, but they're not.
So firing the coach is always going to be the easiest way to rattle the cage.
Probably the only issue with firing Q probably links to what you said about messaging for the fans. Outside of this message board, the Hawks fans and media would think you're crazy to fire Q. He's very well liked and believed to be brilliant. So if firing Q is a message to the fans that they're not rudderless....it might actually have the opposite impact in this instance. (But he still needs to be fired)

The players are clearly checked out and dislike Q...that has been going on for a few years. Plus, his roster and strategy decisions are laughably bad.

Remember when people said the Hawks were innovators, both in terms of strategy & Stan's Proprietary Stat Machine (TM)?
Good times, friends. Good times.
