Q is still owed 12 million as well. Let's see how fast Rocky is willing to work with another team to get out from under that sunk cost due to the offset rules the NHL has.

Nylander and a 1st for Kane plus Hawks retain 3 million of cap each year. I'd be willing to eat up to 4 million but then Toronto has to throw in another sweetener. I think Toronto would jump on that. Tavares and Kane on the same line would dominate. Toronto signs Matthews to a 11 million dollar cap hit in the offseason. Tavares, Kane, and Matthews locked up for under 30 million. I think they could still ice a competitive team.
Hawks could then sign Nylander long-term (cost certainty!) or flip him for more building blocks. Toronto wants to deal Nylander for immediate help more so than lottery tickets (hence the hold up) whereas the Hawks shouldn't be picky.
Hawks could also take Horton off the Loafs hands for an additional asset.

Schmaltz isn’t worth half of that. He brings nothing to the table. Another skater who is incredibly easy to play against.

All for a late 1st round pick that might not even amount to an NHL player? What the fuck? Not sure how this helps Toronto, either, since their biggest need is on defense. What an awful proposal for the Hawks.

What an awful proposal for the Hawks. You'll never get equal trade value for Kane. The point is to get younger building blocks to turn over the core and to get out from underneath unproductive cap hits (as far as the team is concerned). If the Hawks are bent on keeping 88, 19, 2, and 7 for the duration, they will suck for the next 5 years easily. They can try to trade a couple of them to get additional building blocks and still suck so I'd rather take the latter option instead of watching old warriors turn to dust. I wouldn't even be that interested in keeping Nylander. I'd rather trade him too. For all the years the Hawks had zero 1st round picks, they need to try to stack a few years together where they have at least 3-4, 1st and 2nd round picks each draft. Hawks need guys on ELCs not 3 year pros making 6-8 million right now. They need to find their next franchise building blocks at the top of the draft. If they want to do that, they need to tank. Embrace the tank.
