Stan traded up to get schmaltz...that pick was doomed from the get go. It could have been worse: he could have picked Fabbri. Well...Fabbri is the better player...so you qualify to be GM.

Now if only Stank could go and get Taylor Raddysh to complete the hockey trinity. There's your 2nd line! Debrincat-Strome-Raddysh Please no. Pat and Eddie won't stop talking about vegetables again.

This isn't a bad trade for the Hawks. Strome can actually win a faceoff. I'm not sure how you draft a guy #3 overall and play him on the 4th line and expect results. Definitely mismanaged asset there. Look at how Domi has done since moving on. Phoenix is an awful place for a young player to develop. The Hawks aren't as a great as they used to, but I think Strome will get more opportunities to play with actual NHL forwards. The trade is basically Schmaltz for Perlin and Strome as a throw in. You are forgetting the Yotes are a better team than Chicago. Actually, after 24 games, 'our' Hawks have 23 pts...Arizona, after 22 games, have 20 pts.

I like the trade. I was a big advocate of signing Schmaltz to an extension after his quality start (and season in general) last year. I still wouldn't hate him at 4-4.5 per for 4 or 5 years had that been the deal worked out, but the bloom has come of his rose a lot since last year. The grumblings of his agent comparing him to Larkin (6.1 X 5 years) make his probable ask a non starter and probably a big reason he got moved. We already have 6 per tied up in a 50 point forward and can't really do that for another. At least Saad brings some "jam" in the words of the immortal Pully (is that old bastard still alive or just pickled?). Schmaltz is clearly not an NHL center (at least not a good one on a good team), even though I wanted to squint real hard last year and pretend he was. Riding Kane's cape for some offensive production doesn't win faceoffs and have you effective in the corners which eventually a center needs to figure out.
Schmaltz's last season was mostly fools gold....his 18% shooting percentage is not sustainable....meaning he is not a 20 goal guy. The only other time Schmaltz ever scored more then 18 goals in a season is going back to Bantam.
Strome and Perlini are guys with some question around them...but their pedigrees/ceilings are a bit higher and Schmaltz isn't exactly a guy without his own questions at this point.
Maybe Strome can turn into something similar to the last #3 overall center they moved in Turris. And I would be happy if Pereni flourish elsewhere like the Yotes other #12 OA they moved in Domi. I know different types of players....but 2 solid middle 6 forwards would be nice.
