Did this trade need to happen now? Schmaltz was fast. Strome is slow.....and I have no clue who Perlin is.

Typical Stan to sell when value is at an all-time low.
Also typical to go after a former first rounder. There was a time when D.Strome was a blue chip top prospect. Now I'm not too excited.
It's like the Hawks don't have any pro scouts, and they just rely on junior scouting reports. "This Rundblad kid looks real good according to our draft year reports".

I'm fine with this. I was getting sick and fucking tired of watching Schmaltz shy away from the slightest hint of physicality night in and night out. Strome played with DeBrincat at Erie. He's 6'3. The knock on him is his skating, obviously. But the Hawks needed more size and they got it.
Perlini is a pretty good player. Has a good shot, pretty good wheels, and is also 6'3. At the very least this should make the Hawks more competitive physically. I won't miss the Schmaltz we saw this season. He's a pussy.

Arizona has done a piss poor job of developing forwards. This trade, at worst, will probably end up break even. Best case, the Hawks absolutely fleece Arizona. I just don't see Schmaltz as that big a loss. He has the talent, but I question the drive... He regressed big time this season, was reportedly looking to be way overpaid, and can't play center. You don't build around players afraid to shoot the puck, either.

strome has a good fo% and between two of them cant be any worse than the turds weve been seeing.
even if schmaltz ends up being lights out, doesnt matter. he wasnt here, he was pretty useless.

Not sure you can rule Schmaltz out as the 2nd season is always a challenge, especially when the Patrick Kane magic has been shifted to re-energize Toews and Saad.
Worst case - Schmaltz is another high pick the Hawks were not going to be able to lock up without drama and an overpay.
Strome is a center who can win face-offs and maybe play in the top 6 - worth a risk. Kid is what, 21-22. Worth a risk IMO.

Strome is an actual center, unlike Schmaltz. And he's got another year after this, so we don't have to worry about Stan overpaying him yet.
I'm fine with this deal. I agree that worse case it's a wash, best case a win.
