Hawks are foolish to be big players in free agency this year...they just aren't nearly good enough to be overpaying in both term and cap space for one or 2 guys who won't help them go anywhere.
Eyes to the future.
but...stan and McCub...I know....
Id certainly consider offer-sheeting Marner...but...youre giving up SO much future draft capital.

I like RFAs because they are young.
A big money UFA rarely lives up to the hype.
Besides, 2-4 first rounders? So who have the Hawks drafted in the last decade who have been so important? Beaudin, Schmaltz, Beach, Jokiharju, Hartman, Boqvist, Danault, Hayes, McNeil, Teuvo, Olsen, .. some decent players, some scrubs. Nothing to write home about. If you can flip random four of those for a Mitch Marner... I would.

The thing that gives me some pause is that it is probably the only realistic way the team has to be relevant now (assuming the other team doesn't match and then the Hawks have to give up "today" assets). Relevant doesn't mean a Cup contender. And that move does nothing for the blue line, assumes CC stays healthy and is the Stanley Cup version of CC, does nothing for the bottom six and eats up a fair amount of cap space. Stan would have more moves to do and could not afford to do many/any wrong. And some of the current rostered guys would have to raise their game at least one line or pairing's worth of quality. They sure would be fun to watch on offense.

nothing can happen unless conky is 115% healthy.

Marner would be nice, but Hawks have a BIG problem stopping the other guys.

Exactly. The road back to being a legit Cup contender again starts when the blue line becomes legit. This team needs two rocks back there before we can dream again.

Will Kane and Toews have anything left in the tank by the time it comes together though? One hopes but they may have shot their wad last season on offense. More decent Foreards will have to step up by the time the young D are ready to help the team truly contend. But for now take Byram and hope to build the F core back up in the next couple of years through trades and picks (yeah, "Stan Bowman", I know). But the blue line is the closest to being "set" with young potential in joker, boquist and maybe Byram so start there and figure the rest out in the next couple of seasons.

The only question I have is that when Lankinen wins a Cup as the Hawks starting goalie do we need to party out on Madison Avenue naked since he is Finnish? I don’t think that was the case with Niemi, but maybe the rules have changed or have the Fins always like showing off the helicopter cock in public?
Lari might be the resident subject matter expert on this so I will wait for his input.
But regardless, build out from goalie and defense first.

If your cock isn't out, it's not really a party.

Yeah those Fin’s are odd. I was approached in the BMO parking garage once, and this guy walked up to me with outstretched hand and says “hi I’m Kevin.” It was Lankinen. I still haven’t figured out why he did that. True story.

sigh. You were SUPPOSED to give him a bottle of vodka and a handy!
(We have a huge Finnish population in Thunder Bay so I kinda know these things...)

I honestly wouldn't mind grabbing Jordan Eberle as a UFA for that price. No more than five years though which will be the issue for whomever bids on him. So much for this little pipe dream of mine...isles resigned him for five years at 27.5 mil. Not bad money, good term....exactly what I hoped the Hawks would do if they were interested. Good deal for the islanders I think.
