The Hawks finally have some space available, so why not use it all up immediately and overpay a young star on the rise?
The RFA lineup looks incredible, if none of them get a deal done before July 1st. I can't think of another year where so many have held out signing an extension for so long.
Sebastian Aho Patrik Laine Mitch Marner Brayden Point Mikko Rantanen Matthew Tkachuk
Some of them will have extremely tough negotiations ahead.
RFA compensation as per the latest CBA: 6.1M - 8.11M = 1st, 2nd, 3rd 8.12M - 10.14M = 1st, 1st, 2nd, 3rd 10.15M and up = 1st, 1st, 1st, 1st
I don't think the picks have to be the next 4 drafs, but the next 5-6 drafts, so you can potentially suck another year before hoping to get back to that mid-20s pick range where it wouldn't hurt to give 'em up as much.

Carolina has enough ex-Hawks, I'd take Aho.

The compensation for successfully offer sheeting RFA's is way too punishing for my tastes. It had better be a guy who can turn around a team.

Ken is exactly right...you'll end up giving away 2 or 3 first rounders, plus, for any one of these guys

laine probably worth 3 firsts and a big contract... esp if you could round out the d core.
all this hinges on conky.

Given the price tag for anyone that is going to make a meaningful difference, this path does not make sense. And it is unlikely that another team will not match the Hawks bid, save for a situation like Marner where the Leafs have cap isuses. Even then I think the Leafs will do a pay dump to keep their key guys. This link is pretty amusing: linkHopefully this is not the Hawks #1 strategy, and double hopefully Stan doesn't spend a lot of time looking at that chart. Justin Williams and Richard Panik numbers for starters - seriously?

Laine is going nowhere. None of those guys are by RFA sheets. Either will be traded or signed by the team.

I honestly wouldn't mind grabbing Jordan Eberle as a UFA for that price. No more than five years though which will be the issue for whomever bids on him.

Hawks focus this offseason should be strengthening the D and making the bottom 6 tougher and harder to play against IMO. They need 2-3 pieces total covering those areas I’d think.
All of the above are nice options, but don’t see how they drastically improve the team if added, especially for what they would cost.

And "harder to play against" can include relentless Frolik-like forechecking with above average skating ability. And some value-add on the PK in particular is a must for at least some of the adds.

Hjalmarsson would tick a lot of boxes.

I think a shitty D corps is kinda inevitable this year anyways. Again I think the Hawks get outbid if they try to limit the term, the money he may get based on that chart isn't unreasonable imo.
