Rather beat the Oilers and move on to the 1st round proper of the playoffs (and likely lose quickly), or tank and cross fingers for lotto balls (and still likely lose the lottery)?
I'd rather win because fuck the Oilers and their loser star players. Then maybe upset another team before bowing out. Especially if that team is the Blues. I think the Hawks chances of beating the Blues is better than 1/8, and that's what we are dealing with to get rewarded in the lottery.

There will be an extra premium (i.e. necessity) of making more of the picks count in order for the team to stay competitive given the financial constraints of a flat cap. They cannot afford a miss over the next three to four years in rounds 1 and probably 2. They now find themselves in a tough spot with Kubalik and Strome.

A shot at Lafreniere os worth far more...
I would prefer the 9th or 10th pick, as well, but Stan being the one foing the drafting mitigates that a fair amount.

I can see the Hawks somehow finding a way to beat the Oil...just as I can see them getting wholly embarrassed. But both outcomes lead to the same place. The Hawks are garbage.
They would be far better off with a good draft pick.
