I see DeBrincat and Schmaltz as good players. But I don't think they're players that will ever be truly elite. If they were part of the 1010 through 2015 years, they'd be that top notch offensive depth that every other team envied. I feel like they're more in tune with an Andrew Ladd than a Jonathan Toews. If you're relying on them to bring you to a Cup in the next 5 years, you're probably going to just see them be good enough to keep the Hawks from ever getting a good draft pick position.

You don't give away guys that are 50-60 point players, that are 20 and 21 years old.... They are legitimate 1st line players right now. Those don't just fall out of the sky. Neither are "elite" but how many can't miss "elite" players come around every draft? Two or three, tops? This article is really interesting. www.tsn.ca/statistically-speaking-nhl-draft-pick-value-1.786131

Schmaltz really is not a C...he is just so weak physically and suspect defensively...on top of being abysmal on faceoffs.

He's only 21. He will get stronger. He will also get better at faceoffs, and defense can certainly be taught(it's not rocket science). It isn't a lack of willingness or hockey IQ on the defensive side of the puck(like Kane). He is tenacious on the backcheck, and he works his ass off in the defensive zone. He's just a young player, and figuring out center at the NHL level takes time.
He's much more effective offensively, as a center. His speed and skill through the middle of the ice is extremely dangerous. I think you have to let him learn center at the NHL level and see if it works out. He really hasn't hurt them at center since being moved back there, and they really need him to work out. Plenty of wing prospects. Toews has been the bigger liability on defense the last several games.

Well, pez is right...they literally have nothing to lose...because after Nick, they have absolute dogshit in the pipeline at that position.

The '06 Hurricanes feel like the only team in recent history to have done that. Maybe I'm underrating Staal and Ward? Looking up Staal's stats just now, damn... He was good for a while, huh? So no, I wouldn't advocate giving them away. I think they'd be huge additions for a team trying to add a missing scoring touch. My fear would be that hanging on to them as this team is guaranteed to be structured for the next few years will only prevent the team from the true bottoming out that they need. Don't use them as salary dumps, but try to load up on draft picks to boost your chances at those elite players in the draft.

Yeah, if anything, the Hawks could TAKE ON bad contracts, if it means getting picks or prospects as sweeteners. I mean, they're not winning the Cup next year, does it matter if there are bad contracts? Bad contracts only matter when you're trying to stack your roster.

How many players are there in Sweden?? They're gonna run out...Of course, they'll be great to see in 2021, perhaps.

Schmaltz and ADB will be fine top 6 players, but neither is an elite, franchise-type player.

The problem with Schmaltz and ADB is that by the time the Hawks find their next "elite" players if they ever do, they will be on their 2nd maybe 3rd contracts probably making close to 5-6 million each (Stan Bowman effect). That just kills the chances the Hawks have to compete. Cash them in now, get real sucky, and move a bad contract or two in the process.

Again, what's the urgency to move bad contracts? Unless you're Rocky, why do you care?

McDollar and the rest of this FO are not going to sell and admit to the public that the team sucks now.
More realistically is they’ll wait an extra 2-3 years when they’re even worse, then trade them for an underwhelming return. Book it.
