8th can be a really good pick. Much better than what we're used to be getting. Let's take a look at the level of players the 8th pick has landed in the last ten years:
2017: Mittelstadt (looks like an excellent player) 2016: Alex Nylander (too early to say for sure) 2015: Zach Werenski (franchise d-man) 2014: William Nylander (top line talent) 2013: Ristolainen (top pair d-man) 2012: Derrick Pouliot (good NHLer) 2011: Sean Couturier (sexy) 2010: Burmistrov (he had the talent to be an NHLer) 2009: Scott Glennie (who?) 2008: Mikkel Boedker (fuck him, but still a solid NHLer)
There's a good chance to get a top pair d-man (Bouchard, Boqvist, Hughes, Dobson...) or maybe a top line forward, with relatively small risk at this high position. Won't be as hyped as the top 2 or 3 picks, but there's real value here. It wasn't all about the 6.5%. One of those d-men could turn out to be better than Dahlin, who knows.

ANY of them are likely to turn out better than the 5 shitstains the hawks currently employ, not wearing 2 or 7.

From Wyshynski's winners/losers of the draft article, he has this in the losers section:
Teams outside the top eight. The general feeling about the 2018 NHL draft is that the top eight picks will yield significant players, but there's a drop in impact after that. Which is why as good as it is that the New York Islanders have back-to-back picks in the draft -- thanks to the Calgary Flames giving up a first-rounder for Travis Hamonic in an ill-begotten move -- it's a bummer neither of them are in the top eight.

Wahlstrom just missed an empty net in the final second of the USA-Finland U18 world champs final. Finland takes home the gold, 3-2. And there was much rejoicing:

The Hawks had the 8th overall pick in 1998 when they got Mark Bell. And in 1988 when they got Jeremy Roenick.
This is the most important draft for this franchise in a decade. Don't blow it, please.

Package this pick and the Preds to move into the top 5? Stan is more likely to trade it to the Islanders along with a second for the Isle's tenth and eleventh back to back picks.

Nope...after 3 (maybe 2), you are getting a similar (probably pretty good) player through 8. I think the drop off is after 3 and then 8. Take whatever dman falls into your lap or Wahlstrom and be very happy cause to get a player that good at 8 in most years requires a lot of good fortune.
