So Hoss has announced his career is done, but has not 'retired...this little game of hide the cap space makes the NHL look so minor league (oh no...hete comes soccer) Wasn't this 2 weeks ago? Two weeks ago the word "Retirement" was quoted, which I figured would be clarified at some point since he can't really "retire". I haven't seen any sort of updated article on it however so maybe Jim is just seeing this now, I dunno. But the word retirement being used the first time concerned me even if the NHL is doing its best to just let these ones slide away as they happen.

Hossa is not gonna retire and flush the remaining 3 million dollars in salary he would collect down the drain.

The NHL is letting all of these contracts expire without penalty. It would be a dick move to hold teams accountable for contracts that were legal and approved by the league after the fact. Only question is where does Hossa's contract end up since the cap (and the floor) are looking like they will jump quite a bit?

Arizona is an obvious suspect...budget conscience franchise, no one significant they will need to pay any time soon (unless you really think there is any chance OEL stays), lots of dead to semi-dead money coming off the books this year Bolland 5.5, Smith buyout 1.5, Kruger 2.7, Panik 2.8, hell even Hjammer at 4.1 unless he has a significant bounceback is money you are spending elsewhere.
The Rangers pending spending lots in free agency and attempting a rebuild on the fly should be in full rebuild. They owe Stall, the declining King Henrik, and Brandon Smith (the AHL buried version) 17.5 over the next 3 years and will pay Giradi 3.6 in each of the next 2 years to not play for them (and another 1.1 in 3 years).
There is a slew of teams that are a key player or two decision(s) away from being in full on rebuild or already should be in rebuild with some cap room for a while. If Ottawa isn't resigning Karlsson, if Taveres signs elsewhere then the Isles, etc there are some teams that should be looking at a 2-3 year window of getting better.
Last there are going to be teams are some combo of probably not going to be real good &/or have deep pockets to "buy" a prospect &/or pick for the 3 million remain on Hossa's contract. I don't suspect Montreal or Detroit are going to be a cup contender soon and have deep pockets (again dependent on what they waste in UFA deals). Buffalo has a deep pocket owner and realistically won't/shouldn't spend to the cap ceiling until Dahlin needs his second deal.

Well then, we're all good here. He must have dominated a street game, and word got around to Stan.

So it appears that there's almost no chance that any player the Hawks grab at 8 is going to be expected to be on the big squad for the season, right? Quickly checking 6th-10th picks from the past 5 years (13-17), only 2 guys made it the whole season the year they were drafted, Monahan & Tkachuk (both picked 6th overall, both in Calgary). So I guess we'll have to hope that Hinostroza can suddenly become a top 6 forward.

Kane, Kiddy-Cat, Schmaltz, hopefully rebounded (or we are fucked regardless) Saad/Toews are 5 of your 6 top 6. Besides Hino, other internal options are throw Anisimov at wing (or Schmaltz as a poor mans Panarin on a line with Kane & AA), Sikura as a wing, or Hayden (who hopefully follows Schmaltz path who was up and down in his first year of pro out of college and had to do time in the A before breaking out his second year of pro....Hayden was pretty productive in Rockford when sent down...17 points in 24 games. We have cap space and clearly will be adding players this Summer. We probably only have enough space to add one "bigger" piece and that obviously should be a D to start. Move one of Hossa's contract or AA and you have cap space to add 2 5-6 million a year salary type of players. Hell, move one of Murphy or even Rutta and you can probably still scrape enough to add 2 nice pieces and fill out a roster otherwise.

I expect if 'we' pick a D-man at 8, he will be here at least to start the year...This is a pretty heavy D-draft I think.

I don't see any D at 8 that starts in the NHL....Dahlin and MAYBE Hughes would have a chance...but both will likely be gone by 8. We had better address the D in free agency &/or trade so an 18 year old kid isn't needed on D. Hughes is a college kid and not starting the season in the NHL....unless he is assured he is staying in the NHL, he's going back to Michigan.

"We" have 6 dmen on one way deals, to say nothing of all the amazing guys on 2 way deals. And don't forget Calder Cup playoffs breakout star Adam Clendening, who's an RFA. That guy is going places! Plus dmen traditionally develop slower, so it's less likely that an 18 year old dman will be ready for the NHL.

Last year's 1st rounder Jokiharju is much more likely to break into the squad next fall.
