The thing is that Theo knows that this team has about 3 more years before it's tear down and rebuild again. He is unlikely to make the Stan Bowman mistake of trying to resign every piece of his "core". Theo will trade in those chips and close out the tab and fuck yeah that's the right move. I'd only expect maybe Rizzo, Contreras, and Bryant to stick around. Baez, Russell, Hendricks, etc. should be traded or allowed to leave in free agency. If this is about sustained success and not just let's sell the fanbase on 2016 for the next 10 years, that's the way it has to be. This is the benefit of not having John McDonough running your team from behind the scenes. Fuck that guy.

20+ million per year for a 6 inning (if not pinch hit for) occasionally brilliant but flop of a post season pitcher. Exactly. He looks calm and rhythmic which lull's you into thinking he's better than he really is.

Rather have Darvish than Arrieta at this point in time. Arrieta has lost a lot of velocity on his fastball.
If they stay healthy, the Cubs rotation is maybe the best in baseball. Wildcard is Chatwood, but he's basically replacing Long Ball Lackey so that's a win regardless if Chatwood is just average.

Took half the season for Jake to locate his pitches...I heard the Cubs offered him the same deal, I don't believe it.

Darvish is a top 20 pitcher. He's not a great ace, but he will make the Cubs a better team. I don't get some of the arguments against him.
(1) Doesn't go 200 innings. So what? Very few pitchers do these days. Last season only 14 pitchers made it to 200 innings. Maddon doesn't want his starters to get too many innings anyway.
(2) Oft injured. He's had one injury since he came over from Japan. Sure it was Tommy John surgery & cost him a season & a half, but his velocity came right back after it and it's exceptionally rare for that injury to happen again.
(3) Bad in the post season. Putting aside that his numbers are pretty good in the postseason aside from the World Series last year (which they already identified the problem and are solving it), both the Cards & Brewers improved in the offseason. It's important the Cubs make sure they get to the post season before worrying about which pitcher to throw out there when they get there.
I personally preferred the Cubs get Darvish over Arrietta & am very happy with this signing. Aside from the higher then expected contract given to Chatwood (which doesn't matter if the Cubs don't mind going to Luxury Tax hell), it's been a very good offseason. And they still have too many position players who they'd like to play everyday, so even if injuries happen, they are in good shape to plug the whole through their depth, or by trade if it's a pitcher.

I am still somewhat skeptical of the bullpen, although Morrow and Cishek are solid additions. Justin Wilson returning to form would be a game changer. I would still love another reliable power arm at the back-end, but that will likely be a trade deadline move.
Starting rotation looks solid top to bottom, much like it did in 2016 which will be key.
Hoping some of these guys like Contreras and Russell are able to take that next step. Schwarber will also be another wild card if he can get his BA up somewhat this year.

Darvish isnt as good as Jake...and has a questionable playoff pedigree...he gets hit...but the age factor, and Arietta injuries, are important.
