Solid 1-5 road trip to COL and AZ to put the NL Central completely out of reach and in a tie for WC3 with Miami.
Since the SF series at home the bats have gone ice cold against mediocre starting pitching for the most part.
Home this week against PIT and COL before going on the road to ATL and MIL to end the season. Only silver lining about that last week is both Braves and Brewers hopefully having nothing to play for.

Outside of pitching, clutch hitting and the occasional important error thrown in, Cubs looked awful.

Good time to suck. Always want to try to time a hot streak right before playoffs.

Maddon was rightly vilified for some boneheaded decisions and you could argue that the Cubbies won in 2016 in spite of him, but one thing he did right was manage the roster to give guys time off so that they were not completely burned out in September. Granted, he had some great depth players to work with to make that happen without killing the offense, but this team just doesn't have that kind of talent or depth. And Ross has probably secured about as much from this staff as they could. I just hope they did not ruin Alzolay - the baseball graveyard is loaded with starters who are thrust into a heavy innings bullpen slot and their arms implode.

Brant Brown Heritage Night in Atlanta yesterday, that might be the final nail in the coffin of another September collapse.

This team has been running on fumes for some time. Other than a lot of crappy National league teams (or chronic underperformers with big contracts...aka Padres), the Cubbies did not/do not have the horses. And they will probably bounce back like they have every time the end seemed to be near.

If you look at their roster, Cubs have overachieved.

Ye who giveth may taketh away - I don't remember the year, but I do remember packed Wrigley Field doing the Tomahawk Chop when the Braves beat a team that gave the Cubs a playoff berth. The counter is 2023.
And the Cubs have officially gone full circle on Stroman. Now he is likely to want to opt in even though if I'm the Cubs I'm not sure that is best for the team.
It has still been an overall fun season. This is not 1969. This team did not have the talent to really be playoff relevant and overachieved for a change. In shitty Chicago sports world that is a welcome relief from overall ineptitude.

Agreed, it would have hurt more if they were a legit contender, but lord knows they would’ve gotten their clocks cleaned by either ATL or LAD in the NLDS.

This was a total failure by Hoyer not unloading Stroman and Bellinger. Now Stroman likely opts in and Bellinger signs elsewhere.

Maybe, but the higher draft choice may wind up better if Bellinger bolts, which he probably will. And who knows, MLB seems to have a fetish for paying overwhelming contracts to mediocre/shitty starting pitchers. Stroman may want a bigger payday and somebody may well take the nibble. Hopefully it won't be the Cubs.

And any year the Cubs are better than the Cardinals is a +1.
