Agreed, it would have hurt more if they were a legit contender, but lord knows they would’ve gotten their clocks cleaned by either ATL or LAD in the NLDS. Im a diehard Dodgers fan. But they have absolutely no pitching. Lance Lynn? LOL. Kershaw is their best pitcher who should have retired by now. Dodgers aren't going anywhere this year.

Bellinger and Stroman opted out. Hoyer botched the whole season by not moving them. Tim Anderson done on the Southside. Maybe will see him in the Mexican leagues.

Ross let go and Craig Counsell coming in as the new manger, did not see that happening.

Interesting move. Counsell has done quite well with limited resources in Milwaukee. Reminds me of Maddon from his Tampa Bay days. Cubs’ farm system is stocked up after several down seasons and their books are clean unlike the Mets who likely could have paid Counsell more.

Not sure how to read this. It does sound like the miss on the playoffs was hung a bit more on Ross than was represented. Hard to argue with Counsell and the way he has kept that team competitive with limited resources on offense (though he had a killer pitching staff in general - that certainly didn't hurt). Does that mean the Cubs ownership is intrigued by squeezing blood from an onion (i.e. no major free agent signings to augment the kids)? They certainly cannot hang the bullpen issues this year entirely on David Ross.
Unless they are bent on signing some big name pitchers (and Bellinger), I don't really see them as that close. Cincinnati is arguably closer with some pretty incredible young talent. If the Braves and Dodgers pitching staffs hadn't imploded with injuries, we wouldn't be talking about the Snakes in the World Series either.
Makes me wonder if this is partly a war between traditional assessment and analytics....again.

Ohtani 10 year 700 million contract is insane. He will never live up to that contract especially when he is DH only next year. Over at the Athletic they are claiming this is a move to generate more viewership and sponsors.
"Ohtani is, by far, the most marketable player in the game. He netted $40 million in endorsements in 2023, according to Sportico. The next highest was Trout, who earned $5 million."
All that money and the Dodgers didn't address what they really need- Pithing.

Will Ohtani not be back in the starting rotation by 2025 though?
Agreed $700M is a massive overpay and not upset at all the Cubs didn’t shell that out. Feels like LAD could’ve had him in the $600-$650M range without issue. I don’t buy for a second the Jays would’ve shelled out that kind of coin and were likely just a bargaining chip in negotiations with LAD.

I heard it might actually be a 25 year contract where he’ll be paid long after he retires. This way LA can limit luxury tax since salary per year will be lower but he becomes the next Bobby Bonilla.

Isn't he going to be 30 this year? If you squint just right, mayyyyyybe he could be as productive as Ichiro was his last few years.

Every team in the league took a hard lesson from the Dodgers. This is rcazy.
"In an effort to enable the Dodgers to continue spending around stars Ohtani, Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman, Ohtani agreed to defer all but $2 million of his annual salary — $68 million of his $70 million per year — until after the completion of the contract. The deferred money is to be paid out without interest from 2034 to 2043."

Worked for Stan when he signed Hossa and Keith.
MLB should void this contract immediately though. Competitive balance is completely trashed with this precedent. The big market teams will make the little markets irrelevant.
