Hard to see this team being anymore than a middling .500 and WC 2/3 contender this year. Bats have been ice cold for the last 2-3 weeks and there still isn’t a single dependable arm in the bullpen, which has managed to blow 7 games when leading entering the 8th inning. Milwaukee hasn’t missed a beat without Counsell and trading Burnes in the offseason. Cubs need some bats. As far as the bullpen, why can't the starters go more than 5-6 innings? Obviously the pen can't be trusted, so use them less.

You cannot expect to win games scoring one run. There is more potential in this offense than they are showing, and hopefully they won't heat up at the same time the starting pitching starts to wobble. Regardless, they need help in the bullpen sooner than later - that problem won't be solved IMO with the guys rostered at the moment, even when Merryweather returns. Alzolay filled in admirably last year, but the league has figured him out, and his confidence has taken a big hit.

Will Sox be able to draw fans that will beat up opposing team’s base coaches this summer?

The Cubbies are not exactly chewing up the league themselves. Except for maybe the Cardinals (who actually have a closer), the Cubs, even with Steele and Imanaga, arguably have the worst pitching in the division. Most of MLB is not hitting through the end of May, but when Tauchmann is your best offensive weapon, that pretty much says it all (and no offense to MT - love what the local guy is doing). It is probably time to leave Bellinger at first base, leave Crow-Armstrong in center and find a third baseman who can field the position. To me the rest of this Reds series is a pretty good indication of where this group is going. If they do not turn it around this month, then maybe the collective has way overrated the position players.

Gotta admit, big difference between a game under 500 and 33 under after 60 games. Cubs starters have been decent, bullpen has sucked badly. Morel should be DHing. Gotta buy a couple of bats.

It is basically the same roster as last year, with an even worse bullpen. They are nowhere close to being in the same league as the Dodgers, Phillies, Braves, etc.
Should’ve invested that money blown on Counsell on another bat and bullpen arm.

Alzolay's unexpected performance as closer bought them a year of time to figure out the bullpen, but then the league figured him out at the same time as arm wear and tear may render him unreliable going forward. And Gomes offense was another surprise last year. Not this year. Time to lean hard on Amaya and see what they have. And agreed, Morel should be the DH. Unless he didn't want to play in Chicago, Rhys Hoskins would have been a helpful add to this lineup for two years.
Still, there is plenty of time for this to sort itself out. Except the bullpen - they do not have the horses there short or long-term.

Is Counsell still on the Brewers payroll? I don’t know how anyone can see Hector Neris pitch (even when he was getting saves) and think, ya, this is the guy we want pitching the 9th inning.

Counsell gets shit from Hoyer and apparently can't make chicken salad outta chicken shit. Hoyer is filling slots with guys recently released.. Apparently there are no hitters being released. Wait! Maybe he'll sign Abreu!!
