Solid move, about 6 weeks too late. Who gives a fuck about losing a baseball draft pick? When you only have 40 or so...

Yeah big mistake waiting until the team was in first place to improve it. Now they are totally doomed...

Great to have Kimbrel. The team is better and has a legit closer. Personally I'm glad they waited and saved the draft pick. Though given their track record on contracts given out recently, I hope that trend changes right about now...
John Maddon is to relief pitchers what Dusty Baker was to starters, so there is no guarantee that Kimbrel won't wind up like Morrow if they don't change the way they use these assets.
Still, it puts them in the hunt. Though I still doubt we'll see Morrow again, he is suppposedly throwing. Strop is healthy. Edwards, for now, seems to have his confidence back. Cishek is always better when he is not THE guy. Add a decent lefthander and they have enough pitching to compete with anyone.
Offensively they still need a sparkplug. Maybe it will be Bote. Still way the f*** too many strikeouts and guys left on base. Instead of Carlos Gonzalez, they really need a guy with high on-base percentage that can take over the leadoff spot.

Can’t blame Maddon for Morrow. They knew his injury when he was signed and he had a long postseason for LA the season before.
They may be in first now, but the lack of a closer has cost them about 4-5 games already this year. Games they will absolutely need at seasons end given how competitive this division is.

He lost a lotta weight and changed his name to Joe. I don't blame him for the crappy bullpen...Theo brought in Brach, still thinks Edwards can pitch, the 2nd lefty Ryan(?) blows...Can't make Chicken salad outta Chicken shit.

I do think this idea that Kimbrel sucked last year is overblown. He had a 6 game stretch in late July/early August where he was absolutely awful--he allowed 6 runs in 6 innings, only having a single outing in that stretch where he didn't allow a run. His next 13 outings, he allowed a grand total of one run on 4 hits & 7 walks while striking out 21 hitters in 13 innings. He then shit the bed in a game where the BoSox were already losing 6-3 when he came in, and allowed 4 runs in a third of an inning before he pitched a clean 9th in his last appearance of the regular season. He was pretty pedestrian in the playoffs, but still managed to pick up 6 saves in 6 opportunities.
He might not be the same player he was 5 years ago, but he is still far & away the best option for the Cubs and without a doubt makes them better.

Only way the Cubs could get Kimbrel is with Zobrist effectively retired due to divorce. Was Sharp banging Zobrist's wife by chance?
Not sure why the Cubs picked up Carlos Gonzalez. Yes, it was basically for free, but the guy is washed up and has been for a few years now. Weird part is that he's not even that old.

It was worth a flyer at this point in the season, but ya, he’s done.

when Rizzo and KB are finished their careers will either have their digits retired by the cubs? HOF?
I think Rizzo will by cubs, maybe KB if he doesn't leave. Neither imho are HOFers.

For sure Rizzo isn't right now. If Bryant plays like he did his first two seasons for another 5+ years than he has a chance. Numbers would probably depend on how long they stay with the Cubs, right? If Rizzo plays the rest of his career at or near where he's been the past 6 years, than maybe. I have a feeling Bryant leaves town for the highest bidder as soon as he can. He's still pissed the Cubs held him back and cost him a year of free agency.

hendricks hurt, why not have Montgomery spot start?

hendricks hurt, why not have Montgomery spot start? That would be logical. Unless they want to bring up the hot Triple-A guy du jour.

Or Chatwood. Given how Montgomery and Chatwood have pitched, they probably need to give the kid at least a look.
