David Ross is doing pretty well. NOBODY expects the Cubs to do anything...Ross is a caretaker.

Not sure the free agent route is a smart one this offseason for the Cubbies. Especially someone like Rodon who will unquestionably rediscover his injury tendencies moments after signing a kazillion per year deal on the North Side. Same probably with Correa. The pipeline is loaded with guys who carry no guarantee. A closer on a short-term deal would make sense because, if healthy, he will be another trade chip before the deadline.
There is a difference between loading up on wins against the Reds and Pirates in the 2nd half and actually being a legit contender, even in the shitty NL Central. The Cubs are not close to the Brewers or Cardinals....at least for now.

I’ll believe Ricketts spending big on FA’s like Correa when I see it. In his defense, the Heyward deal must still sting all these years later.
As for the playoffs starting today:
Braves in 4 Dodgers in 3
Indians in 5 Astros in 4

Though I know his best days are behind him, I would not mind the Cubs doing a short-term bridge type deal for Eric Hosmer. He is good defensively, has leadership pedigree for the young team, and first base is a pretty big question mark. The Padres have already eaten his overpriced deal, so there is that too. Cleveland has been riding a strong defense for several years during their rebuild, and since the Cubs still have a bunch of contact pitchers in their rotation, it makes some sense. Assuming Hosmer would want to play with the Cubs.

On the one hand, I don't really see where the Cubs are close to anything meaningful yet, so signing a whole bunch of free agents seems a bit premature.
Bellinger looks like a worthwhile risk for one year - if nothing else he can hold down center field. Taillon is a bit of a question mark, though he does seem to have more talent that other of the Cubs starters. They still have no #1 or #2 starter on the roster. He is also a potential trade chip later in the summer. He would be hard pressed not to generate more offense in Wrigley than he did at Dodger Stadium.
Of the three shortstops, I doubt Swanson will come, and Correa will go to the highest bidder (probably won't be the Cubs). The team is at least two years from being relevant, so any of those guys will have to dial that into their thinking.

Bellinger is a good bet with the shift being banned. Apparently the advanced stats show he was hurt most by it. Likely to be flipped at deadline. Taillon is just an innings eater. FA pitching is very expensive for basically borderline starters anyway.

As a Dodgers fan, even with nobody to take his spot, Bellinger won't be missed. He was advised for 2 years to change his swing yet he refused. Jerry Harriston even went on air and begged him publicly to change his approach. Bellinger flat out refused. He only made tiny stance adjustments, but that wasn't enough. .210 BA and 150K's - Ive seen enough. His glove is bad ass though. A Very good outfielder that's a shell of himself offensively.

The Cubbies track record in free-agent pitching has not been good since 2016. A good defense gives more room for error with a shaky staff. More very good pitching prospects coming up through the system - please!

A guy who refuses to make adjustments at the plate and strikes out a ton, he’ll fit right in here.

Swanson for 177 million? Didn’t they just learn their lesson with Heyward?

Sort of a head scratcher on Swanson. They will be terrific defensively up the middle, and with their pitching staff they will need to be. To put it in perspective, the Brewers top 3 starters are all far superior to all Cub starting pitchers, and it isn't close. He does seem to be less injury prone than Correa, so there is that. Still can't believe the Braves didn't re-sign him.

His hitting numbers are also a byproduct of how deep that ATL lineup was. Much weaker supporting cast here in Chicago.
