Cubs coming back to Earth. Matt Mervis looks completely overwhelmed in the big leagues. The dog days of summer are already here for Chicago baseball.

At least your team should hover near the .500 mark for the season, kind of like what was expected with the additions they made coming off the past couple years. It could be worse, you could be a Sox fan like me and want to shove pencils thru your eyes, after of course stabbing every guy on the roster first. Ok, maybe a couple can be spared but that's it. These sons of bitches and the owner and the GM could all get lost and I'd be thrilled to start over.

April and May matter, but less so when you play in a crappy division, and it is pretty clear already that both of the Central divisions are sub-par. Whether either/both Chicago teams are relevant in the playoff race will come down to pitching, and both teams really need the veterans to step up. The White Sox have Hendricks and that alone puts them a step up on the North Siders right now. The only real bright spot in the Cubs bullpen has been Leiter. Taillon and Lynn have both been abysmal.

Letter gave up the long ball to lose a couple games ago. Had a save the next Taillon finally had a good start last time out... I'm surprised Sox haven't DFA'd Lynn. Just awful all year...Cubs don't have great talent, Sox have talent but shitty IQ.

I love the new schedule format of every team playing each other at least once during the season, but certainly hurts both Chicago teams not having as many games against their shitty Central division opponents.
Cubs should be selling as much as they can by the deadline, they have no chance making it in this year, let alone advancing if they miraculously landed the WC3 spot.

Agree the Cubs s/b sellers...Sox should also sell for some smart players, since they are dumb as stumps.

Totally agree on the new schedule format, but I doubt it will hold as is. For as much as we are glad to not see the Pirates and Reds 18-19 times a year, not having those Cardinals/Brewers games ultimately becomes a financial issue unless the team is selling out all the time. That times 10 for the NL and AL East as competitive as they are.
Still on balance the changes are good. I think ultimately they'll have to make it more difficult to steal, but that is really the only downside. I get it, there are probably some pitcher injuries due to lack of time between pitches, but that is where the game needs to be unless they want to be like the NHL and always have a limited fan base. Turn the game over to the stat geeks at your peril.

So, in the dark ages, pitchers had 20-25 complete games? Now they go 6 innings and it's a quality start.

Trade Stroman for as much of a haul as you can muster. Keep Bellinger through this year. He is going to test free agency regardless, and he is a reason to come to the games, makes the rest of the lineup better and also gives the Cubs a chance to stay in the race in a shitty division. Other than the Baez trade so far, I am not all that impressed with the Cubs prospect return (thus far) in dealing the big names. If Mervis was showing major gains, he would be up already.
